Reflections on Thing 8: Basic Coding

I’ve done it! I’ve finally made my calculator! Who knew you could achieve so much joy from something as trivial as a calculator – one that can barely perform basic trigonometry or solve simultaneous equations. But, imagine the possibilities!

I’ll admit I was sceptical at first. An oldie like myself doing techie stuff? HA! Who would’ve known? No more “Grandpa Freddie” in the office!

Last Tuesday, Chief caught me playing with my calculator and got quite upset I hadn’t started the report on Certitude’s expenses. While in my “hacker man” mode and with a tad bit of guilt, I was struck by an interesting revelation. I thought to myself, “I know what I’ll do! I’ll create an expense calculator!”

At first, this idea seemed too wild. It took me nearly an hour to create my basic calculator. Imagine how long this would take?

I thought about it and thought about it…sitting on the idea… swivelling around my desk, reluctant to begin my report. Eventually, the thrill of the idea superseded my fear of failure and I gave in to my alter ego – “Heck it! You got this Freddie!”

After a tiring three hours with two coffee breaks and with no interruptions, I had done it again. I proudly present to you, Freddie’s Calculator version 2.0…
