Reflections on Thing 3

posted in: News | 3

Inspired by the Data Makeover and Demystifying Data Things released this week, I’ve been helping Kris with the data visualisations that Chief asked him to make, and putting some of what I’ve learned into practice.

I thought I’d roll up my sleeves and produce a visualisation using our subscriber data. In our first survey we asked people to indicate their levels of various digital skills, allowing them to create a personal digital skills profile. A ‘Heat Map’ is a great way to visually summarise the variations in responses, and following this guide it was fairly straightforward to produce the visualisation in Microsoft Excel.

It looks a little like the ‘DNA’ of our 23 Things subscribers! One observation is that our subscribers feel they have varying levels of skill across the different categories. The 23 Things sure do cover a lot of territory in the digital world.

Thanks for the help Jose, it turned out really well, I was under a bit of pressure from you-know-who to create that visualisation. Looking at Q4 in the heat map, it seems creating content is the most challenging digital thing for our subscribers too. It’s comforting to know I’m not alone. Oh, I’m out of coffee…
